Free. Outdoor. Concerts. To us Chicago locals and our summer visitors, that’s music to our ears. Each summer we’re treated to 10 weeks of classical music concerts during the Grant Park Music Festival held in Millenium Park.
Now in its 78th season, this year’s festival will include its signature one-of-kind mi x of symphonic favorites and choice rarities, as well as two commissioned works to celebrate the 50th anniversary season of the Grant Park Chorus. Other performances unique to this year are the BBC/Discovery Channel’s Arctic and Antarctic documentary, Frozen Planet, set to music on July 11 and an elegant evening of ballet music on June 23.
The Grant Park Music Festival 2012 runs June 13 – August 18 and is a world-class Chicago experience that summer visitors should definitely take advantage of. Best part is there are no tickets! All the concerts are free and seating is first-come, first-served, so simply show up.
Live like a local and pack a picnic and a blanket for the open seating on the Great Lawn, or for the free back sections of the Seating Bowl. Even better, make a day out of it! The Great Lawn opens in the afternoons of concert days. So get there early, reserve your spot and take in the sights of Chicago’s famous Milennium Park before the music starts.
