Can you feel it in the air?  Football season is upon us!  Chicagoans are serious about their sports teams (especially ones that bring home a Championship more than every 100 years)!  To help usher in these gridiron glory days, we’ve got some fun facts about the Chicago Bears as well as some helpful game day tips for anyone going to a game this season.

Fast Facts from the 50 Yard Line

*When the Bears first started playing in Chicago back in the 1920′s, they played at Wrigley Field (home of the Chicago Cubs Baseball team), which is how the Bears got their name.

*Owner and founder George Halas owned the Bears from their start as the Decatur Staleys in 1920 until his death in 1983, an amazing total of 63 years.

*In 13 seasons, from 1975 to 1987, Hall of Fame Running Back Walter Payton only missed one game.

*The orange and blue uniforms came from George “Papa Bear” Halas’ alma mater, the  University of Illinois.

*Soldier Field has hosted stock car races, rodeos, music concerts, and even a skiing/toboggan event.

*The Super Bowl Shuffle song was recorded before the 1985 Bears team even played in the Super Bowl.

*The Chicago Bears have won 9 Super Bowls (1921, 1932, 1933, 1940, 1941, 1943, 1946, 1963, 1985)

Game Day Tips

*Most Parking facilities around Soldier Field open 4 hours prior to kickoff and close 2 hours after the final whistle.

*’Family Friendly’ parking lots can be found south of the Adler Planetarium and at the 31st Street Beach lot.  No alcohol consumption is allowed in these lots.

*Rather than pay for parking, take public transportation.  CTA bus #146 runs down Michigan Avenue and drops off right outside of Soldier Field or the CTA Roosevelt station which is served by the Red, Green, or Orange line trains is just a few blocks east of the stadium.

*The Bears Ultimate Tailgate event is free and open to the public prior to the first 4 home games outside of Gate 6.  Tons of activities, free giveaways, almuni autographs, and fun things to keep you busy.

*If you can’t make it to a game, you can still get an insiders view of Soldier Field with a stadium tour and check out the Field, Colonnades, Grand Concourse and locker rooms.
