At Best Western Plus River North Hotel, I’ve asked fans what they’d like to see on our blog. What are they craving? Well, it seems at the top of that list is food. Or, more specifically, people want to know about “Cheap Eats” in our neighborhood.
Some guests do want to experience the exquisiteness that is “fine Chicago dining.” Hey, you will have no trouble finding that in Chicago. (We’ve even got a list of Great Ethnic Restaurants in Chicago.) But sometimes people just want an affordable lunch in downtown Chicago. Ladies and gentlemen, this list is for you.
Pizzeria Ora – Of course, no list would be complete without our on-site restaurant, Pizzeria Ora! Okay, shameless plugs aside, the pizza is really pretty great, plus they have a bar and serve breakfast. And their lunch special can’t be beat. Order your choice of a soup or salad plus a personal pizza – thin crust or deep dish, and it’s all for just $6.49 (add tax). I usually walk away with pizza to spare.
Al’s Italian Beef – They have very reasonable prices serving sandwiches and wraps – half of which are under $5. Plus they’re only about a block from the hotel (169 W. Ontario St.).
Ohio House – Kitty-Corner to the hotel, the Ohio House Coffee Shop serves a great American breakfast if you like pancakes, waffles, omelets, and breakfast meats, regardless of time of day. This place is very reasonably priced and gives you a good amount of food.
Jewell – Jewell is a grocery store located just a couple blocks from the hotel. Go to their deli counter to see what prepared foods they have for the day. You can get a lunch for $5 or less, and if buying for more than yourself, it’ll be even cheaper per person.
Yu Choy – Like the rest on this list, it’s fairly close to the hotel and won’t break the bank. You can probably guess, but it’s Asian cuisine. Enough said.
Taco Burrito King – offering some fantastic Mexican, this is located within walking distance of the hotel. This isn’t your Qdoba or Chipotle (though we love those places too). And the portions tend to be on the large side. Win-win! While not unreasonable in terms of price, this is probably the most expensive on the list. For a meal and a drink you’re looking at about $10.
Close to the hotel are a number of chains you’ll recognize including Subway, Potbelly’s, Jimmy John’s, and the Rock ’n Roll McDonald’s (across the street from us). Sadly this McDonald’s doesn’t have a dollar menu. But oh well, it’s still McDonald’s, right?
