The Windy City is home to one of the world’s foremost collections of art and antiquities: the Art Institute of Chicago. It features more than 300,000 works of art in 10 different departments – but don’t worry, you don’t have to see them all at one time. Known for an exceptional collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works, the museum showcases works by Monet, Renoir, Cezanne, Toulouse-Lautrec, Seurat, Matisse and Vincent Van Gogh. You’ll also find miniature rooms with furniture from the Middle Ages, pieces by Frank Lloyd Wright, and galleries with antiquities from Ancient Greece, Egypt and Rome. If you want to visit the museum, here are a few tips:
- Don’t try to see everything at once during your first visit. Choose your favorite sections, and head there first.
- To avoid the crowds, the lightest visit times are morning through early afternoon, from Monday through Thursday.
- The museum is open daily from 10:30 am to 5 pm, but you must be in line for tickets by 4:00 pm. On Thursday evening, the museum stays open until 8 pm. Admission for Illinois residents on Thursdays is free after 5 pm with proof of residency.
